  • Third place of sector achieved in American Newsweek magazine’s Global Green Ranking 2011
  • Generali Deutschland specifically advances sustainability activities
  • About 40 projects promoted by Generali Future Fund in 2011 alone

 

The international Generali Group achieved an outstanding third place among insurance companies in the Global Green Ranking 2011. This ranks the Group among the top sustainable insurers worldwide following Munich RE, that ranked first globally, and the British Aviva Group (28th place). Of the 500 listed companies the Generali Group ranked 30th overall, gaining six places over 2010. The ranking is published every year by the American Newsweek magazine.

In co-operation with the two sustainability research service companies Trucost and Sustainalytics the ecological footprint and environment management of companies were analyzed. In addition, the disclosure score indicating the transparency and quality of sustainability efforts was included in the evaluation as a separate category for the first time. The study initiated in 2009 is an attempt at comprehensively assessing companies in respect of their contribution to environment protection.

The Generali Deutschland Group also advances its sustainability activities under the heading of “responsibility“ and thus contributes fundamentally to the sustainability commitment of the international Group. “For the Generali Deutschland sustainability is an important driver of viability and competitiveness. The sustainable orientation of the Group forms an integral part of our Group strategy“, says Christoph Schmallenbach, Managing Board Member of Generali Deutschland Holding. Since last year the insurance group has been using electricity exclusively produced from renewable sources, so its carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by more than 50%. With the introduction of a Group-wide environment management system in 2009 the insurance group demonstrates its commitment to the efficient use of natural resources and aims specifically to minimize the environmental impact of power, paper and water consumption.

Recent examples of the Group’s high sustainability awareness are the participation in the econsense “Forum on Sustainable Development of the German Economy”, and the nationwide project named „Nature Close to the Heart – Commitment to the Region”. In co-operation with the Association of German Nature Reserves (VDN) the project aims at motivating people to engage in nature protection in selected natural reserves.

Social commitment and contributing to society as a whole represents another focus of the company. In 2011 alone, the company has supported about 40 projects for “promoting the commitment by, and to, the 55-plus generation”.  Especially the new guide titled „We need you” of the Generali Future Fund provides specific recommendations for action and contact addresses for more civic commitment beyond concrete projects.

With the objective of advancing responsible action at the economic, ecological and social levels, the activities will be placed in a more professional framework and interlocked more closely with the international Generali Group which is listed in many sustainability indices, such as FTSE4Good, ASPI, STOXX Europe Sustainability and ECPI.
